92k1500 4x4 indicater lights on floor display & not engaging for no apparent reason

Last time I put it in 4wheel the lights
worked & It engaged the front wheels.
I've done no off road activity & there's
Really no reason the lights should
Be out or not engaging? I checked the
Fuse & wires underneith cause it seemed
Like it would be something like that but
They appear to be good....? Is there other
Areas of connection or fuses to check?
What could be a fix?
Thank you..

Sounds like the 4x4 actuator on the front axle died. Very common issue on the 92 and up Full Size Chevy's.

Thank you, do you think that would make
The floor display not light?

Jason Collins 02-29-2012 11:21 AM

This is my first 4x4 & my Haynes manual
Just dont cover something's.
I will get actuator & update...

If the actuator is bad, it will NOT light up the 4x4 light on the floor when you put the truck in 4 wheel drive.

Thanks. The guy I got it from told me
It has different gears in it for mudding
It makes it to where I can't use the 4wheel
On the road, It works off road.
Is this better? Cause it kinda sucked not
Being able to use my 4wheel on the
Snow covered road last year...

I don't understand what you mean "it has different gears in it for mudding". Do you mean the front and rear axle gears are different ratios? If the front and rear axles have different gear ratios, the 4 wheel drive is never going to work even if you had a good 4 wheel drive actuator.

I'm not sure what he ment, it's my first
4x4. The 4wheeel works I just pulled
A van out of the mud about a month ago.
But on flat surfaces with no mud
After about 10-15 mph it feels like each
Wheel is pulling in a different direction
Or something like a cat with tape on
It's feet lol. But when I use it off road
You don't feel none of that....
Dose it have to be all wheel drive
Instead of 4wheeldrive to drive
4 wheels at driving speed?
Yeah he just said different gears
For mudding... Didn't really explain.
I was just like oh ok. Lol
But I have used it off road before
& it worked like it should but when I'm on
Dry flat ground it acts like its having a
seizure After 15 or so mph....

When in 4wd on dry ground it will feel alot different especially when turning. If it is you actuator they are around 100 bucks. They fail alot. i would put a cable actuator in it. Try 4x4 posi lok. There bolt in kits and work great. the elctrical actuators get wet or snow covered and short out and disengage the front axle. Yes in water or snow the times you want 4wd.

After reading your post again i would check out your cv shafts too. If they are worn or bent could cause a vibration at random speeds
