93 k5 will not fire

I have a 93 k5 that I recently just brought back to life after 8 years of sitting. Mostly just got it running to get thru inspection, ten a head gasket blows. Its all good... figured I just complete the top end rebuild and thanks to a buddy who owns a machine shop with an Engine Tech account, no problem. So I've got a kid who wants to learn more about Chevy engines ( he tinkers with foreign ****) and didn't see a problem with letting him help out. I was standing the for most of the time explaining what be had to do, and my only thoght is something went wrong when he was resetting the valves. Or at least in my mind that's where I see things were not done the way I would've done them, but again... thinking theres not too much he can screw up that I can't fix and at least he ll learn that not everything u need to know can come from a book. Lol Ohhhhh Boy..... Alright... plain and simple, this baby wont fire. Its not like when u turn a key and the motored turns over and chugs but wont start... no... dear god all I hear when he hits the key is what sounds like the fuel pump or the injectors spitting fuel. It sound like only the electrical stuff is kicking on. The valves are moving , the distributor is turning, which e has way out of time and I can't even get it close to being where it needs to be. But theres no compression . Doesn't even sound like it wants to turn over. Talk about learning from mistakes ... I swear if I can get his figured out I wont ever let another person touch my truck. Help.
