automatic locking hubs
andbody, know of any auto locking hubs for an 88 K5, im new here so sorry if its been asked before. automatic 5.7 TBI
|
Unless you want a hub that is guaranteed to not lock up when you need it the most, stick with the manual hubs and just lock them in when you think the going is gonna get tough.
The hubs on my K5 are locked in all winter long so all I have to do is pull it into 4wd and away I go. It is safe to run with the hubs locked in, just not as good on gas that way. |
:icon_that:
manual hubs are so much more reliable. also when you lock them in you know they're locked in. autos take time to lock in. i wish i could have manuals on my blazer but its next to impossible. thats why im getting a k5. |
ok sounds good. what happens if you put it in 4 wheel and dont have the hubs locked
|
You are still in 2wd for all intensive purposes.
|
so no damage will be done? what exactly does locking the hubs do?
|
Locking the hubs connects the wheel hub with the outer drive shaft on the axle. If the hubs are unlocked and you are in 4wd, the front axle will just spin. If you are in 4wd and have only one hub locked in, the front axle will just spin.
It isn't exactly good to put it into 4wd without the hubs locked in, but it shouldn't hurt anything so long as you don't drive around in 4wd with the hubs unlocked for too long. |
i know my dad has put his truck in 4wd without locking the hubs when he gets stuck. then takes it out. so i wouldn't worry about damage but like kyle said i wouldn't go driving cross country with the 4wd on w/out locked hubs.

I deffinatly dont plan on it but just wanted to know. anybody would think you guys know a thing or two

probably does hah
|
I only take things apart that need to be taken apart. But I have been doing this type of stuff since I was 6.

I dissect defective parts to determine the cause though...
|
i understand what you're saying. but have you ever took something apart just to see how it works?
|
I definitely have in my younger days. I do not do it anymore though. I do not have the time.
Heck, I tore down my go-cart motor one day on a whim. Took it completely apart. Ported & polished the intake and exhaust ports. Decked the head on the belt sander. Picked up an additional 5mph on my top speed before I changed the gearing to pickup 15mph total. It would top out at 60MPH and this was when I was 10! LOL |
thats sick, i learned a trick from an old mechanic to incerase compression. take the head(s) off an fill em in with some nice tig weld, gotta be careful, but they used to do it in the old days
|
Good to know all of this...
You guys touched on what I needed to know. I drive 20miles back and forth to work. SO I could lock in the hubs and keep it in 2 wheel drive with no damage?? That is good to know. Thanks.
|
Yep, no damage other than to your mileage (which won't be severe). It is much better than getting stuck and having to jump out to lock in the hubs!
|
agreed
|
if you have the stock 10 bolt front end i have a set of automatics hubs i could work a deal with you for if you still want them.
dont know why you would but the offer is there. |
