Black smoke and won't idle?

Since you described seeing black smoke, as previously mentioned, that is fuel. I'm just throwing it out there, but if I were you I would replace the coolant temperature sensor on the top of the intake next to the upper radiator hose. These go bad often, and when they do, the injectors dump way too much fuel down the TB and it will never run right. Even if this isn't the problem, it is still good to replace this sensor because the they go bad VERY often. They should be a common maintenance item.

On these TBI motors, when the temp sensor goes bad it rarely ever throws a code. I've replaced them countless times and maybe 5 vehicles threw a code when it went bad.

Well depends on the vehicle I guess my truck is a 94 with tbi 4.3.Mine went bad and I got a codes.Multiple codes I changed the coolant sensor and fixed.Ironicly Im having the problem a code for multiple problems.I changed the IAC sensor that fixed it for a while noe the light will come back on at a long idle period.
