California Smog, 1977 Blazer..hope this isn't a re-post
Good afternoon everyone.
I just joined this site today and am really looking forward to the future. I'll get right to the gritty here. I live in wonderful Democratic CA and have had a bit of an issue with getting the darn thing smogged :icon_doh:. It's a 77 k5 with a 4 barrel carb. I took her in for the smog pre-test deal and they said that it simply had a lot of garbage coming out of it. They also advised that my fuel-filler neck was shot. The dude also said that he didnt see any Cat-Con but said it never came with them so it SHOULD be able to get by w/o em. Got the filler neck done (what a pain) and have been rather skiddish of taking it back in. I have changed the oil, ran it pretty regularly, and seem to have cut some of the excessive exauhst. I have heard that changing the plugs and wires help, leaning out the carb and using rubbing alcohol? If anyone has any clue or tricks for this ridiculous process? I would be VERY grateful as it's hindering ownership transfer and registration. Thanks for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. ++Josh |
As far as I know it came with a cat but hey, what the smog inspector says goes...
After a complete tune up and new air filter maybe you might try goin to your local auto parts store and asking for one of the "will pass any smog test" products that you pour into your gas tank... it may be worth a shot. |

The early emissions laws were based on the GVWR of the vehicle in question. If it came with a catalytic converter, federal law requires that it has one.
Catalytic converters became standard on the K5 Blazer in 1975, but only on the models with a GVWR under 6000lbs up until 1979. In 1979, the GVWR was raised well in excess of that (8500lbs IIRC) causing all 1/2 ton and most 3/4 ton vehicles to be required to have catalytic converters. |
