Carb

Have a 350 in my 85 K5. Looking for suggestions for replacing the carburetor. Not looking for anything extreme just need the motor to run better but the best of both worlds would be nice.

What's on it now? What does it not do? The Quadrajet is a very capable and when adjusted properly will give good power and decent fuel efficiency.

It is quite possible that he has the E4ME computer controlled carb. It can be somewhat problematic getting away from the CCC. The ECU controls the transmission lockup as well as the distributor. So you would need to get a non-computer controlled HEI distributor and rewire the torque converter lockup.
If you do have the E4ME carb, your best bet would likely be to get it rebuilt. |
The dreaded E4ME read alot about that one last night. Is the E4MED any better what with the dual capacity pump?
|
The E4MED is even worse as the dual capacity pump is expensive and pretty scarce if you need to find one to replace it.

It has an old aftermarket edelbrock carb now. The problem is I think the electric choke is bad. I also have to let it sit and idle for at least 10-15 minutes before I drive or it will stumble and die.
|
You can get another electric choke if thats the route you choose to take. Im a Holley kinda guy , Ive got a filing cabinet full of eldeljunk carbs that Ive taken off. I would say a 570cfm holley would work out pretty well. Some adjustment required though. The cheaper alternative would be to get a new electric choke mechanism if that is in fact what the problem is.
|
If that is the case, then just swap a new choke onto it and call it a day. If you fell up to it, you could rebuild that carb to freshen things up.

Mine used to stumble a bit on take off as well and I put a new Edelbrock intake and 1406 carb. It runs great with no stumbles. I'd say throttle response was improved by 25-%35(just judging on the before and after feel), not sure of any power gains. I was really satisfied with the results of this upgrade when looking to improve the throttle response. Gas mileage seem'd the same, if not a tiny bit better.
