Frame rot, To fix or not to fix

My 86 I just picked up has some problems with frame rot. Is this fixable or should I junk it and start over? Even the drivers side rear shackle is bent inward.

nice. the sad thing is i have actually seen way worse then this. its kinda a "its up to you" situation. you can just start plating the heck out of it, patching it where you can and hope for the best. to do it right would be to take the body off and get the fuel tank out of there but as rotted as that truck looks im sure the body bolts wouldnt come out either.

alot of trucks ive owned have been rotted messes too but never had any frame issues, always floor rot. good luck whatever you decide

Ok Thanks, well I'm thinking of getting an 85 that has a little body rust and putting the lift off of the 86 on it and using the rotted one for parts.
I had an 87 in high school and it had floor issues, but I have never seen one have the frame ate up.

thats what i did last time around. i got sick of buying rusted junk up here and went down south and found a pick up that was rust free. it gets old having to build a new truck every 3 years due to it falling apart

Get rid of it, that thing is toast.

Yea. id call it done. I hope you have a cutting torch and a good impact gun for those bolts lol.

At best you could patch it but I wouldnt waste the time.Strip it down and part out whats whats good scrap the rest.

Man where u at tgat you need to build a new one every 3 years? They using salt?

1sttimejimmyowner 02-19-2013 10:23 AM

Where I live they over kill on the salt,Its not uncomon to see trucks with perfectly looking bodys only to be parted out cause the frames rusted out.Im dealing with this issue on mine right now.If I dont get the frame cleaned and protected by this upcoming spring or summer I wont have a frame left by next year.

Man now why would people want ti live there? Cars cost to much to watch them rust away in a short time
