Default HELP!! need 2 replace ignition 84 k5

I did a search with no results, btween my son and I we have 5 k5's of various yrs. The ignition key for my 84 was lost (which is a long story in itself) We want to replace the ignition switch but are at a loss. So far we have removed the chrome bezel from the switch, an access panel near the tilt lever and dropped the column to release the heavy wires/levers that run down the column but still cant get the switch to turn or come out. What have we missed?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its a tilt wheel with auto shifter column if that makes a difference

Here ya go, for what its worth anyway...
  1. Remove the steering wheel
  2. Remove the turn signal switch
  3. Place the ignition switch in 'Run' posiition, then remove lock cylinder retaining screw and lock cylinder
  4. To install, rotate lock cylinder to stop, when holding the housing as shown below. Align cylinder key with keyway in housing, then push lock cylinder assembly into housing until fully seated.
  5. Install lock cylinder retaining screw. Torque screw to 40inlb for standard columns or 22inlb for adjustable columns
  6. Install buzzer switch, turn signal switch and steering wheel

Good luck! Biggest problem I see is that the procedure calls for the ignition to be moved to the 'Run' position. If you do not have the key, this may be quite difficult.

Oh and I do believe that once you get the steering wheel off you will need to remove the lock plate (what locks the steering when in park). To do this, you will have to push in on the lock plate and then fish out the snap ring that is on the steering shaft. This can be a pain depending on the strength of the spring behind it. I had made up a tool to get this plate off on the steering column of my Chevelle, but I'm not sure where that thing is now... LOL
