Keep my 1974 K5 blazer from burning down!

I need help figuring out why the wire on the back of my alternator (the one bolted to the single post) started smoking! So from the begining, about a month ago I had a dual electric fan set up installed on my 74 blazer, I ran it for about 3 weeks and everything was great...until I installed some new headlights, just simple H4 headlights nothing fancy. I started my truck after installing them and noticed smoke coming from the wire in the back of my alternator so I, a panic I shut of the truck and havent started it since. I'm so afraid that its something serious like it just being to much energy for the 40 year old electrical system so I'm coming here to see what small things I can try to fix it before I get heart broken and start looking into spending thousands of dollars on it to make it handle the energy it has to put out!

I had an alternator go bad and melt the charging wire on my corolla. The regulator went bad and it started putting out crazy high voltage. So maybe have the alternator tested?
