Need help wipers work then just stop and so on.....

Hey gang,

I have a 93 K5 and my wipers will work fine on delay setting, low and then high with no issues for miles then all of the sudden they will stop and will only work if I say twist the switch on and off or push the mist button. Any ideas on the cause? Is there a relay that may be going bad?

I believe there is a control circuit board on 92+ as part of the wiper motor assembly. It's a widespread problem. I think a new board is like $25 at NAPA, but most guys just pull the board out and re-solder everything. It only takes one cracked solder joint, but it's hard to tell which one it is...

(FYI) The pre-92 k5's have a mechanical switch on the motor assembly that signals the control board (under steering column) when the wiper has completed a cycle. When the contacts get dirty/corroded, you get high speed and the motor won't shut off on it's own. The switch is easy to remove and inspect w/o tools, but it's usually the wire pigtail that plugs into the switch that's at fault.

After posting my question I was able to find the same PC board info on the net as well. The problem spanned quite a few years with a couple that were covered under a recall. I'm going to pull mine apart today at work and see if I can fix it.

Thanks for the help.

Pulled the board this morning to find two solder joints cracked all the way around. I re soldered them with overkill and re did the others as well. Wipers are working well now. Just in case I did check the local auto parts store and they have a new board if needed for $29.00.
