Hi there all.

I have recently become the proud owned of an 1974 Full cab Blazer.

6" suspension lift, 4" body lift. 37" swampers, 350 4bbl, headers, true monster dual.

I buoght the car in Sweden and I am having trouble getting it registered in Holland because they Dutch DMV are jerks.

I've decoded my vin number and all is well and concurs with the vehicle. My egnine is a 10066036 castnig number which is a crate motor from GM's Mexican facility.

The trouble I'm running into is that I have some, seemingly factory (based on the neatness and precision) numbers stamped in the frame on the passenger side in front of (towards bumper) the front wheel. I cannot for the life of me figure out what they are. It reads as follows and is also positioned as such on the frame rail:

338682 21
7 26 73

I can only assume, as it's a '74, that the latter is a production date, but what's the first?

The DMV wont' give me a registration because they insist on investigating the first number as they claim it could be a partial old VIN number (required to be put in the chassis in Europe) and so if I cannot prove what it actually is I can't drive my baby. It's a crazy system. Hope someone here knows something, already tried 5 dealers in the US and none could help.

Sure looks like it is a the build sequence number from the VIN...

This will help you break down your VIN:

My 74 K5 VIN, CKV184F1xxxxx, breaks down as follows:
C = Chevrolet
K = 4 Wheel Drive
V = 350-2 V8 (originally a 2 barrel carb'd 350)
1 = 10 - 1/2 Ton
8 = Blazer, Jimmy
4 = 1974
F = Flint
1xxxxx = Build sequence number

What you have found on the frame is likely the con-vin stamping. The first set of 6 digits will be the build sequence number from the VIN of the vehicle it was originally built for. I am not sure what the 21 means, but the 7 26 73 is likely the build date, July 26, 1973 which should line up with the scheduling for a 1974 model year vehicle.

Found this on Colorado K5. Seems like a plausible answer. You may have to find the frame stamped VIN for you bureaucratic friends though.:eek:

the part number for the framerail seems right, as the last 6 digits of the VIN are different.

I need to find a way to be sure as to convince my bureaucratic 'friends' indeed. Found the VIN stamped on the top of the drivers side framerail next to the steering box as you'd expect. Except some moron drilled a hole thru to place a bracket at some point so...

If anyone could give me more info to corroborate the frame casting/numbering idea that would be great, if you need the VIN please PM or email me.

I'd already broken down my VIN and it seems we have a very similar vehicle :)

Mine too breaks down as follows:

C = Chevrolet

The number up front does not correspond with the VIN serial number, or in other words the last six digits...

Can you look and see on your frame for me? In front of your passenger side tire if you have any number stamped in? Should be just in front of the front wheel right where the frame becomes straight again. Might take a little scraping but if you'd want to it might help me figure this thing out.

Now if only I could find a database or something like the several available online for engine casting numbers I'd be all set...

My guess is you need to find one of the other VIN's on the vehicle..not sure when they started putting several "hidden" VINS on them. As far as tracking down the part number for the frame itself.....rots o' ruck. I have GM mechanic friend I'll ask him but....

Lost track of this.. I have the original parts listing books for these trucks. I will try to take a look in there to see if I can find any information.

Where were these numbers located on your frame? Can you take some pictures and post them? I will look on my frame to see if I can find similar numbers.
