New Oil Filter Adapter threads not long enough

I've been dealing with an irritating oil leak coming from my oil filter adapter since I got my vehicle. I decided for the time being to replace the oil filter adapter that was on it, one with lines for an oil cooler, with one that just takes the oil filter. I got the Melling MFA350 part from O'Reilly's, and just bolted it on. The problem I have is that the threads for the oil filter are not deep enough to allow me to put the oil filter on enough to seal against the block. I'm getting some leaking down the oil filter. I'm really not sure what to do about this one. Everything I can think to do is halfassed and probably not a good idea. Any suggestions?

i would double check your part numbers and filter application. I can't think why you'd have problems. Post up some pictures, sometimes that helps jog the memory.

I really ought to stop posting threads here until I've had a few days to try and figure stuff out. after looking at the sealing surface, I realized that it wasn't painted black, but rather was just covered in dried out oil gunk. After half an hour with some carb cleaner and some fine grit sand paper, I've got the surface shining, and the oil filter sealing.
