Problem starting hot engine, 82 305

Hey,

My engine has always had this weird thing where it seems like the flywheel does not want to turn when the engine is hot, I've had this car for six months. SO when its hot you can hear the starter pushing but it sounds like its straining and it take a second or two to get any speed up. There is no issue when the engine is cold. Last night it did not want to start at all so I worry its getting worse or something really needs to be addressed.

Oil level is fine, maybe too high. The starter and battery are both less than 6 months old.

Suggestions? What to check?

bump? Nobody has this? Could it be anything with the tranny, the PO switched in an 700R4.

Timing is off a little, try turning the dizzy a little and see what happens.

Not sure what you are getting at, do you think it's firing too early and pushing back? The distributer is locked in place with the cam I thought? Do I want to adjust clockwise and how would I do that.

Every once in a while there is a loud bang during hot start up, I thought this was the starter slipping, is it an early backfire?

First warm the motor up, loosen the dizzy hold down bolt, turn dizzy clockwise just a little bit, start truck and see what happens.

I had a 85 5.0 that would do the same thing, once it got warmed up it would crank real slowly, adjust timing and it would fire right up. I even had a high torque starter in it, I'm not sure about the loud bang but I promise if you adjust the timing it'll work.
