question & advice about hidden safety switch
i want to make an hidden safety switch on my fuel pump, as a precaution.
when i disconnected the ground from the pump the fuel gauge went all the way up. and when i reconnected the ground it came back to the right position. my question is - will i make any damage to the fuel gauge or the pump itself by connecting and disconnecting it every time i want to drive the truck? plus, i'd love to get some ideas about things i can disconnect as a precaution. maybe the ignition module or something, any idea will be appreciated. I've always done the ignition. That way the truck cranks and the theif will think truck is a turd and move on.

and by ignition you mean ignition module? no problem with disconnecting it?

I would think the ignition module in the engine bay would be east to do. Just clip the ground for the module, and get 6 feet of black wire and solder it into where you clipped the ground in the modules harness. Now pick a spot behind your bumper for your 2 prong finger switch, and hook both those ground wires up to it.
Then when you parked in shady areas you would just casually flick that switch on your way by the front of your truck and open the ground circuit on your ignition module and no start... |
If you have the HEI distributor, you can just put a relay on the +12V coil lead. The truck won't start if you don't have spark! Problem is, if you forget, you can flood the engine pretty quickly.

Yeah... Ok. I'm not going to go back through your posts and determine what year you have. It is quite possible that your distributor is an HEI distributor. They came standard on many models and were used to upgrade the old points style distributors all the time (that's what I did on my '74).
If the coil is located on top of the distributor cap, it's an HEI distributor. |

Sorry I didn't clarify. I cut the main red lead going into the HEI. And put a toggle. Someone else told me to ground it out when I first did it and I forgot to flip off my kill and fried my ignition module inside the distributor
