Rear End
 

I have a 1990 full size Blazer. The ring gear sheared off some teeth and i am in the process of pulling the ring and pinion out of the rear end. My problem is the bolt that goes through the spider gears and holds a pin in between the axles broke off. Therefore, i cannot get the pin between the axles out in order to get to the keys that hold the axles in place. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting the axles out without removing this pin?

Eh. That bolt has broke on every single axle I have ever worked on that belonged to a k5. Funny thing is it will come right out. Just unscrew whatever you can then get in there with a pick or small screwdriver and unscrew it. Its not in there tight it should just back out

If that doesn't work, a short left handed drill bit and a right-angle drive for a drill may allow you to get at it.

i cheated on mine, and welded a nut over the sheared off head.. and backed it off.. and there right you shouldnt have to do that... i ididnt realize how easy it was to back out.... so it should be able to be wiggled out like abig84 said..

and if you do try the weld technique like i did, remember diff fluid is a little flammable :)

yeah the threads dont tighten its the head of the bolt that tightens so with that snapped off and the pin being lubricated all time makes for a easy time getting out. especially if its not a clean break and you got a little edge to grab on.

If you havn't gotten your pin out yet, Drill a small 1/8th hole in it, if its stationary enough to do so, and use a small Easy out, available at any auto parts store, for usually under 5 bucks for a small cheap set. there amazingly handy to have around!

Unfortunately the break is a clean break and i cannot grab anything on the bolt and cannot turn the bolt with anything. I tried a bolt extraction kit but have still not been able to get it out. Does the bolt go all the way through the pin into the other side of the spider gear holder? I have tried to drill the bolt down to the pin but it still will not come loose. getting frustrated and ready to drop the whole real axle and just replace the axle. Any other ideas?

clean it up real good with carb cleaner. get some jb weld 5 minute epoxy and glue an extension to the broke off bolt and try to back it out that way .
