Speedometer Cable change......

Hello everyone, new member here, introduced myself on the new guy page. I have a 1980 K-5, that originally had cruise control. It did not work and I did not care to fix it. Took out the unit and bought a 1 piece cable. Seems to be more to it than meets the eye. Connected gauge head end, removed the nut on the transmission end and it seems to be part of the speedo transmission adapter on the tailshaft. I loosened to nut on the transmission and removed the little gearbox, and connected the cable directly to the transmission speedo cable input. No speedo action when driving. I obviously don't understand what is happening. What am I missing? The lower 2 piece cable appears to be part of the speedo adapter. Nothing in the Haynes manual, not finding what I need on You Tube. Would someone kindly clue me in. Thanks you very much, Jim

can you just connect the cable to the little adapter thing instead of removing it? there might be something different from your new cable to the old cable, make sure the little square end that comes out of the end is as long as the old one you took out.

New Cable is installed

Well, after thinking on it overnight, I figured that the old cable was just stuck in the adapter on the tailshaft. I used some needle nosed pliers and applied some tension to the cable. It actually was a pretty hard pull, but the cable finally released from the drive. The hardest part of this whole job was routing the cable to keep it away from the exhaust. After 5 years, finally have some idea about how fast I am going. Anyway, thanks for looking......
