Transfer case leakage
 

Hey guys and gals new member here with a question for the experts. I have a 1989 K5 that is leaking oil out the rear of the transfer case through the yoke (not the rear seal). Is there some sort of oring or something that is internal around the housing bushing that needs to be replaced? Not that it is leaking that much it just makes a mess in the carport.

It sounds like the plug in the rear of the yoke is leaking.If the rear seal leaks,it usually slings fluid up on the floor pan when you drive.There is no o-ring or sleeve on the output shaft of a transfer case.On some two wheel drive transmissions,there is because the yoke is vented.Make sure you have the correct yoke.The spline size is the same as a turbo 400 or a 4L80.On a vented yoke,there is a small hole in the center of the plug on the rear of the yoke.Best seen with the u-joint off.If the yoke is correct,no hole.The plug in the rear of the yoke is like a small freeze plug.You can remove the yoke from the u-joint and do one of three things.1.clean the rear of the yoke and put some RTV sealer around the plug externally.2.carefully remove the plug by using a drift and tapping it out from the inside and put some red locktite on the outter diameter and reinstall it.3.get a new one.

P.S.There is a 4th option.Take it to a shop and have it fixed.At least now you have some(maybe more)insight on whats involved.

what transfercase do you have? the np203s are known to do that. i just took mine off and shoved a bunch of silicone in there and put it back together. other people told me to weld the hole but didnt go that far

Hey ryan is it lifted? if so the drive shaft probably needs to be made longer Mine did that after it was lifted the drive shaft sits too far out of the cone on the transfer and the oil would sling all over the under carriage you make the drive shaft longer and that would help ...also wile you are at it change it to a flange connection you are gonna have to take apart the transfer but its not that difficult of a job plus it would give you a chance to inspect the chain there are a number of web sites that sell the kit.
