Default '87 K-5 Blazer. Runs, but wont accelerate.

Ok, well i got my blazer from my brother, who drove it for really long time. Free car, something to drive to school and back, sounds great. Ive been driving it since this fall, but a few weeks ago it broke down.

Basically it will turn on just fine, but the engine makes a weird noise. I can shift into any gear and it will go, but as i give it gas, it doesnt go faster. I'll push down on the pedal, say what should normally get me going 25, but i'll be going under 5mph.

So someone suggested it might need transmission fluid, i checked it out and it was a little low, so i filled it up, but that didnt help. Then it was suggested that maybe the transmission was failing and to check and see if it was shifting alright(its an Automatic) and i can change gears easily and it shifts fine going from drive to reverse to park.

Im not too savvy with cars and trucks, so if anyone has an idea of what might be wrong, let me know. Would really like to get it back up and running so i can have something to drive again. Thanks for any helps.

So when you try to accelerate, does the engine rpm increase?

Yeah it does. The RPMs and MPH are both on the same speedometer, and it only has 1 hand, which reads the MPH. But when i press down on the gas you can hear it rev, but it just doesnt increase in speed.

I explained that to someone and thats why they had suggested it was a transmission problem.

There could be many reasons why your tranny is slipping. Does it whine? Could be the sun/planetary gears are stripped. Clutches are burned up. You could have a clogged filter or fluid passage. Incorrect adjustment of linkages. Bad vacuum modulator.

An automatic transmission relies on fluid pressure to function properly if that pressure is to low or to high in the wrong places then the tranny fails to work as designed.

Your best bet would be to get the tranny looked at by a knowledgeable mechanic...

Does it have an O2 sensor?
