Where to start...
What do you want to do with it? Mall-crawl, rock climbing, expedition, mudding.... lots of setups, lots of combinations that work for specific applications.

87,im guessing its fuel injected aka tbi? Google "ultimate tbi mods" and do it. makes a difference. put a quarter in the regulator, advance timing a few degrees, get exhaust done, drop in k&n filter, and maybe a mild cam and a tune.

Depends on how much money you wanna spend.

Not to nit-pic but *performance* is a relative term. Assuming that you mean 0-60 I don't know if you started with the right vehicle.

Your tbi motor is limited to about 250hp unless you're going to drop a bunch of cash into it. And at the point you start making serious HP you'll need to start replacing axle shafts and transfer case's.

The best thing I can suggest to improve performance is to take all the stuff you're carrying around and leave it in the garage. Get a soft top and save yourself a few hundred lbs off the back... every lb counts. The other upgrade would be to swap your gears. 3.73 is a common gear ratio to find in the rear end and depending on what size tires you're running you could lower the ratio (higher numerically) If you put some 4.56 gears in the rear end and then you'd be able to smoke the tires, is that the performance you're looking for?

The best mod for that truck is to not raise it.

Couldn't agree more with this. Also some good things to do, either drop in K&N filter or CAI. Do the ultimate TBI mods, put in some ACDelco Rapdfire plugs, change wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter and you should be good to go.
