Is this a fuel injected truck? If so it could be the sending unit. I believe they were part of the in tank fuel pump. My 86 F250 which is not a FI system but has in tank fuel pumps had that same trouble. The gauge quit working on my front tank. When I pulled the pump the sending unit was part of the pump & there was a bad wire. I ended up replacing the unit. At that time they were not available separate & were a dealer item only. Now that has changed. Fixing the wire was really not an option because the fuel screen was starting to come apart & I figured the pump itself was not far behind from going bad & didn't want to pull the tank again. I believe the ground wire is on top of the tank.
