So I'm doing a brake job and needed some fluid. I noticed that every brand of fluid now is "Synthetic" brake fluid. It was my impression that brake fluid was always "man made" in that it was basically glycol (a type of alcohol) with some lubricant in it. It is used in paint and solvents and such. Is it me or is every brand out there jumping on the band wagon of the "Synthetic" marketing scam. I've always used "conventional" bake fluid. Is it ok to use "synthetic" fluid with what I've always used? I really don't see why it would. Thanks for any reply's.

 

I'm not sure about this either. I've always used dot 3 or dot 4 for my 89 but other than that I guess that I never really paid that much attention to wether it's synthetic or not. I do know that some manufacturers have said have said not to use synthetic brake fluid in older vehicles due to wear and possible malfunction. Meaning that the brake system on older vehicles wouldn't be able to maintain adequate pressure with the newer synthetic fluid.

Again, I'm really not to sure about that.

 

Use any fluid that is labeled as 'DOT-3'.
