thanks for the info! after some thinking, ever since i changed the oil to synthetic, i have had some trouble getting the "clutch packs" to engage. i could hear the clutchs engage before i changed the oil. since i changed the oil, it seems like rarely the clutchs engage, almost like the synthetic is too slippery. i have spent the last two days looking at everything i can think of with the g80 to help diagnose the problem, and truthfully i think its coming down to the gear oil.

The choice of oil is not the cause of the issue. There had to be an underlying problem before the oil change.

well i took a look at it today and yep a gear is missing teeth. its a small gear that the locking part of the g80 connects to. must have happend when we had a lot of ice on the roads here. the good news, the guy that owns the garage has like 3 g80's and a few limited slip diffs, he asked me what one i wanted so i told him instead of going to another g80 and having this problem again, ill go with a limited slip.

... you could always just replace the gear. unless you are the original owner, then the dude that had it before you must have drove the piss out of it in those 43k miles....

the g80 dont greande like the used to. When the stoped being the Gov-Lock and started being the G80's, a lot of the issues were addressed. however the issue of having something moving LINK with something not moving to make both move seems like a poor choice in design....

live and learn... good luck with the new rear end!

haha actually the owner before me was my grandma, but... the blazer was a demo before she picked it up. i think it was my fault that the gear stripped out tho, i was on some ice and started to slip and then it caught and yea... it just didnt make sense that every now and then it would lock and other times it wouldnt, but now it makes sense after i took it apart. haha yes live and learn

how hard to replace

So, how hard would it be to remove the G80 and then install a powertrax no slip? I have installed the powertrax before on a previous vehicle and loved it. It worked great and definately made a huge difference off road.

plug and play so long as you buy the one for your diff :D
like this one

Buschkj24 12-20-2009 10:04 PM

i thought we had a 7.625" rear end? is this the same one but cheaper? also, would i still be able to turn without wheel-hop on pavement? i would be using this on a DD and i dont want to go threw tires like there going out of style haha
