Help! Aftermarket Catalytic Converter in California
Hello everyone. I need to register my car in California as I now live there. Problem is, I went to get a smog check and the previous owner welded on a different catalytic converter, which is illegal here. Does anyone know what the best way is to replace it? Does anyone know anything regarding this subject or have any ideas? Thanks.

The best advice I can give is to move back to where it came from our really ANYWHERE other than Comifornia. Chances are you are going to have to pay a "licensed" shop to make the repair to be able to pass but I only know whay I read on the internet about California and their BS. I'd suggest asking the place that failed you for a suggestion on how to make it pass. |
You can buy an aftermarket CA-legal cat. I got mine at Summit for about $125 and welded it in myself. Passed smog, no problem.

OUCH, living in Cali lol! I feel for ya :) They are WAY too strict in my opinion... I won't be surprised if they pass a law if your vehicle has some dust or dirt on it just so they can write another ticket lol!!!

I have to agree with you on the draconian smog laws here, but I actually thought $125 was a fairly reasonable price for a CARB-approved converter.

I totally agree with ya, $125 bucks is a good deal... Was it on sale or is it their every day price?
It's a Walker part number 81923 if you want to check it out or look for a better price. |
