How much does an engine rebuild usually cost?
 

Just curious on how much it would cost to rebuild and bore my 4.3 .030 over if I bought the rebuild kit. Would you recommend doing lifters and rods too?

I just went through this process myself. I started out with having to replace the crankshaft and bearings $ 300.00 for the crankshaft and bearings. I had previously replaced the timing chain, oil pump, lifters and had the heads milled after blowing a head gasket. (That's a rather stupid story) I stripped down the motor completely found out it was .40 oversize decided to go with new piston rings $90.00 however I took the block to a local machine shop to deglaze the cylinders and the cylinders were to worn so it was bored out another .20 over (.60 over total). Also the camshaft bearing were replaced. All said and done I spent just a little over $900.00. A friend of mine said that it's cheaper to go with a reman engine unless you're building for power. Depends who you get to do it. Doing it your self is cheapest, but if you are not knowledgeable in rebuilds, bight cost more in the end. If you get a shop to do it, your paying the shop rate start to finish, but you usually get a warranty with it. Another option is find an engine builder that will build it for cash on the side(usually the cheapest route).
Id say anywhere from $100-2000 depending on what has to be done, and who does it.

That's exactly why mine cost so much. I had the shop purchase the new pistons and rings and assemble everything together. It coast more but I am happy with knowing it was done right. Had I continued to do it my way I would have missed the cam bearings leading to engine failure.
