low fuel

Does anybody know how many miles you can do with the low fuel on? Just wondering.

~40-60 miles (~65-95 kilometers) depending on your fuel efficiency.

I won't let my fuel get low enough to find out. The fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel and if you run out of fuel, you run out of lubricant for the pump. I don't like the idea of replacing a fuel pump because of a low fuel condition.

Thanks for your replies. I saw a thing on 20/20 the other night on how far you could drive when your petrol gauge sit on the Empty line. Made me think to wonder how far you could drive a blazer when the low fuel light comes.

My exact words.

Well, the lubricant doesn't really apply directly. The pump *is* lubricated by fuel (slightly) and as long as there is fuel over the suction, it will have fuel inside the pump. The biggest thing is that the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel outside of it. If there is no fuel around the pump (low tank level), then the pump will run hotter, impacting its performance and life.

I try to keep atleast 1/4 tank or better in all of my vehicles and typically won't let it get below 1/2 in my DD.

*Moving to Gen Chat* - fullsize tech really doesn't apply here does it?

My Blazer sits on full for while & when it gets to 3/4 it's ona fastride to empty. Whenthe guage gets to 1/4 I start looking for a petrol station.I'm not going to test it & have to phone or walk for petrol, so like swartlkk says, don't let it get too low. Besides, who knows what lies at the bottom of the tank waiting to be sucked up & block the fuelfilter.
Around Auckland to work & back I get +- 320km to a tank. 18/19km per litre. Or 12/13 if you'r talking US mpg.

Jamie, Hi, You're the guy who e-mailed me some time ago looking for a bumper. Did youfind one? I didn't know you were a member of this forum so welcome anyway.
