new 4 cylinder suvs are fast?

Hey guys, my friends and I went out to eat at this hot wings place for dinner tonight and we were on our way back. We took 3 cars, a mazda 3, 98' my blazer, and a new nissan rogue. I gotta tell you on the way back, we didn't race at all, just had a good accelration going and that rogue was fast (i know the 3 was easily the fastest tho). It really irritated me, so i looked up the numbers and it says that the rogue has 170 horsepower and like 175 torque. I looked up the 0-60 time and it was at or near the lower 8's. the blazer i think does around 9.1. So i was kind of upset to see that this new 4 cyclinder nissan with half the power as my pushrod 4.3 liter v6 and is somehow faster. anyone else feel this way the newer cars? like our at one point "power house" suvs are getting beat by new smaller engines? im kind of hurt by it lol

Your '98 blazer is hardly putting out the 195 hp it's rated for 10 years after it's manufacture..and on top of that, your blazer is 5300ish pounds, to the Nissan's 4300ish pounds.

and that on top of a probably smoother/quicker shifting transmission to stay in it's power band longer, the nissan will beat you. every time.

Now if you two were to race towing a 3000 lb boat and trailer, I'd bet you'd take that one.

I wouldnt have thought the 4 cylinders would be even close to those numbers, but i know the '06 and up Toyota Rav 4-4 cylinders are a dog on accleration (not sure on the numbers though)but the v6 are absulutly insane, you have literly hang on, when you hit the gas. now im not really positve on numbers but i think the v6 are about 220ish hp.

My blazer only weighs 4100 about with add ons(minus driver). You sure your not thinking Gross weight? Hell my 3000gt weighed only 3200lbs. Just look on your title for the weight. Anyway yes the cars these days have a whole lot more hp. Maximas are pushing almost 300hp I believe for a 6 cyl. The new honda civic Si 4 cyl runs high 14's.

My dad has a 2007 Rav 4 V-6 That thing goes, 263Hp its rated it. I really wanna bring it to the track lol.

You are correct... I confused GVWR with curb weight  Although curb weight for a 1998 4-door blazer is 5134 lbs, to the curb weight on the RAV-4 of ~3300lbs. So that makes an even greater weight difference than I originally indicated.

Actually, the curb weight of the 2nd gen 4 doors is going to come in ~3,700-4,100 lbs. depending on whether it's 2wd or 4wd according to msn.com.

haha so is the blazer any heavier than? i thought i read once that it weighed 4000lbs. cause if they are about the same weight can the CVT transmission actually make up for the lost power?

RE: new 4 cylinder suvs are fast?

The CVT transmission seems like it'll work good for the high RPM power vehicles... Not so much for low RPM torque... Supposedly it keeps the engine in the power band while your foot is on the floor...

My Blazer weighs as much as a 4 door 4x4 :D

According to the official GM Specs on the 'net, a 2004 4 door 4x4 = 4215lbs
