paper in oil pan
4 Attachment(s)
i picked up a 98 with a blown motor. it threw #5 rod bearing. after removing the engine i discovered 2 approx 4" x 4" sheets of heavy paper in the bottom of the pan. a smaller piece approx 2" x 2" piece was sucked up into the pump pick-up. this was a kinda heavy almost gasket mat'l weight.... can't believe this thing went 86m miles like that... has anyone heard of issues like this?
|
thats odd I wonder how that got in there.
|
Seems to me like the work of a shotty mechanic that left something in there! I'm willing to bet thats the reason for the bad rod bearing as well.

Oh thats for sure... She starved for oil. |
I worked in a engine shop a few years back
we had a customer bring in a "just rebuilt" engine he just bought He just wanted it opened up and a couple thing checked When we pulled the oil pan there was a flat washer laying on the windage tray It didnt take much to convince the customer to do a full tear down There was other issues we found the above is easily caused by repeatative work Its the same reason why so much of that work is bar coded now to make sure each task is done I could easily believe that a plant worker seeing the paper and saying "its not my job" to remove it |
an old friend of mine used to work on motors, mostly tear downs, and he said that he once found a can of brake clearing in the lifter valley!! i guess almost anything can happen!
but i would agree that it was forgotten about. stuff like that happens to the best of us. |
man thats crazy, is it paper or varnish layer from the oilpan?

all that nasty brown tar left in an engine look at the pics maybe that is a big piece of it that flaked off the flat surface of the pan.
the edges of the varnish or paper look tattered. |
no varnish... it is def paper..took it to a local GM dealer and showed them... never heard of it either...
