96 Blazer not firing

I see a few posts with similar problems, but each one seems to be somewhat unique.

The Blazer is turning over quickly enough to start. It is not a battery problem. About 1 in every 3 tries, it will keep turning over but it won't fire. It doesn't seem to be related to whether the engine is hot or cold. There are no other driving problems visible. It is starting to do this more often over the past 2 days and I need to figure it out. From what I read in other posts, there seems to be a wide range of options. I should start with the easiest first. Fuel filter, plugs, fuel pressure...Any suggestions for progressively harder steps or checks?

THANKS.

check the basics first: do you have fuel and spark when it won't start? make sure to listen for the fuel pump priming.

Yes to both. I have turned the key on to accessory, and I can hear the fuel pump priming. I checked the distributor cap and coil and everything appears to be fine. Until yesterday, I would just try starting it right away. It now seems as though I have better luck when I wait for the fuel pump to prime.

sounds like the fuel pressure is bleeding off. what happens if you prime the pump a few times, then try starting it?

I would start by checking for the correct fuel pressure, the fuel pump may be running but not delivering / holding the correct pressure. Check either the shrader valve or inline somewhere. The pressure should be 60-66 psi (415-455 kPa). Its a simple check and could help determine where to go next.

My fuel pump sounded as though it was working, but would not get above ~50psi and it would drop off quick.

Like BlazerRJM says, check for proper fuel pressure first.

RE: 96 Blazer not firing

The check engine light came on this weekend and it kicked out P0171 and P0174. "Fuel system for bank 1 and bank 2 was too lean". The readout suggested the Mass Air Flow Sensor. I read in another forum about these codes and the symptoms seem in line. The posts suggested cleaning the MAF sensor, replacing the PCV hose, changing the air filer, and the O2 sensor.
