How to check codes without OBD II

Hi all,

I have a 97 4.3 L that im trying to check trouble codes on. The issue is that the check engine light comes on everytime the gas gauge gets to about half a tank of gas. After it gets to about one quarter the check engine light goes away. Without an OBD II code reader is their a way I can do it with a paper clip and then check the codes. If so once I get the codes is there a place I can go to see what they mean?

Any help would be appreciated.

Autozone does it for free, have them do it.

Well, sorry to be the one to say it, but no, you cannot do a key-dance or paper clip an OBD2 equiped vehicle. Some of the newer vehicles have a sequence where you can put the cluster into diagnostic mode and have the codes read out on the cluster, but this is centered mainly on the likes of Cadillac and probably some of the higher end GM vehicles. My parents '97 Caddy STS has this function and it gives you access to all of the sub-systems.

Ill bet you have a bad gas cap. When there is less gass in there it cant pressuize because its bad. Just a suggestion, not totally sure might not be it.

I thought about the gas cap as well. I bought an OBD II reader from ebay ... so we will know in a few days what the issue is.
