Pitman arm question

I'm converting my 1970 Blazer to powersteering from manual, but it looks like I need a new pitman arm. I ordered the moog arm but it has a swinging ball joint on one end - mine just has a spline on one end (for the steering box) and a hole on the other for a bolt. Has anyone done this swap before? Where do I get the proper pitman arm? Thanks :)

RE: Pitman arm question

When doing any kind of conversion you need to find out whether the parts will fit and what they came from and what parts are needed to make the conversion work.

For example:

Where did the power steering box come from camaro another blazer truck or van then you need to research compatible parts for your vehicle. Which parts do you need to change to make the power steering box work, do you need to change the drag link (the bar that the steering arm and pitman arm connect to to move the tires for steering).

Plus the Pitman Arm is the arm that mounts to the frame opposite the steering box or on the passenger side. And the Steering Arm is what connects the steering box to the Drag link...

Hope this is helpful to you and good luck, with time/money you can get this project finished and be steering to your hearts content.

The steering box was bought new - it's the oem part for a blazer with power steering. The splined shaft on it doesn't mate up to the pitman arm that is on my blazer right now.

I've tried searching on google but honestly I'm quite computer illiterate, do you know any sites that might have information on a swap of this nature?

Hey, I came across a site when I was originally searching for blazer forums. Its called colorado K5, and its a big site only about K5 Blazers. Heres a link to it... Colorado K5

Hopefully someone on their has done this swap and can point you in the right direction.

RE: Pitman arm question

Well then you should be using parts that will work on the end of the power steering box not from your original manual box. I think that you are confusing the "Steering Arm" for the "Pitman Arm" which is located on the passenger side of the truck.

Also you should be able to find a steering arm from any full size C/K series truck since GM does not like spend more money making differences in parts. So parts from a C series P/U will work on a K series Blazer of the same period. You just have to know how to look for the parts.

If the parts were purchased at the Dealer and you told them that you were swapping from a manuall they should have told you all the parts that would be needed to make the job go a lot easier, not to mention they want to sell you the parts at premium.

I also recomend that you seriously think about getting a repair manual like Haynes or Chiltons so that you can see what you are talking about and get the parts you need without looking foolish.
