whining noise in 2005 trailblazer

There is a loud whining noise coming from front of vehicle under hood by grille. This is a 2005 factory warrany just expired. Also it acts like it doesnt want to accelerate at first and then after a min it finally accelerates like it is supposed to. It goes but just slowly. Someone told me it could be the powersteering pump and i also heard of a poor fan clutch design. Help please.

RE: whining noise in 2005 trailblazer

Hello, these cooling fan clutches are electronically controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) which in turn allows monitoring and diagnosis via a scan tool. If there is a problem with yours it will set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in the ECM. They did have problems with these fan clutches on the early model years (2002-2003) but yours should have the updated version being a 2005 MY. However I seem to recall that there is an update to the ECM programming to address this issue, but it may not apply to your truck. If you bought it at a G.M. dealer used or new, take it back to them and be VERY nice and courteous when you ask them to possibly do a GOOD-WILL warranty repair for you (being so close to the warranty expiration they should help you out).

Thanks, if it is not the ECM could it possibly be the power steering pump like someone told me. They listened to the noise and that is what they thought. The steering seems to be fine though sounds like could also be a belt or something.

Yes a noise in the engine compartment could be just about anything that is rotating including the belt. Here's a little trick to help pinpoint it. BE VERY CAREFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the engine running take a long screwdriver or prybar and one-by-one stick it on each of the components with a pully driven by the belt and put your ear on the handle of the tool. again BE CAREFULL!!! You should be able to here the noise in the handle (slightly amplified) when it is on the component causing the noise.

check your power steering fluid. A whining noise from the power steering pump is usually from low fluid.
So if the fluid is low, fill it back to the operating range, and it should stop the whining....that is, if it's the power steering pump that is making the noise
