Ignition key cylinder broken?

Ignition key cylinder broken?
My wife has a 2002 Trailblazer. The other day, she went to start it and the key would not turn. Steering wheel was unlocked so it wasn't jamming it. Fussed with it, took key out, tried every which way, but it would not turn to start. Finally had to have it towed to a dealer who said the lock was 'broken'. The lock cylinder, not the electrical switch. $100 for the part and over $300 labor (though it only took them 2 hours to fix it).
A) did I get royally screwed on this? and B) has anyone ever had a lock cylinder 'break'? Car only has 70,000 miles on it, and it's not like it gets started a dozen times a day.
Of all the cars I've owned, I've NEVER had an ignition cylinder lock break. (at least until now...)

Unfortunately, not everything is defect free. And there were a number of bugs in the 1st year of the GMT360 platform. The labor part seems pretty steep. Heck, that's $150/hr! The part does cost around that much though.
