Cat converter help !! $$

Hey guys i took my truck (2002 LS 4dr. 4x4 v6 4.3) to the shop for a rattle from around where the cat was. (service engine light was also on) turns out the cat is bad n needs to be replaced. My mechanic gave me a price of about 600$ for parts and labor. Does this sound right ? If it is that expensive Im thinking of replacing it myself. Can anyone direct me to the exact parts I need and maybe a step by step guide ? This would be such a huge help. Thanks for your time guys.

I could but I pass. And I could tell you with 90% certainty WHY it was trashed, if you had no previous hints of malfunction.. but I pass on that too.

I'm sure someone else here has done it, will be glad to help you and I wont mind a bit. Will they tell how how to keep it from happening again next month?

Maybe.

Do a search on ebay and find a direct fit cat. That is what I did. No welding needed and fits just like the OEM. Removing the CAT is a basic nuts and bolts job. Put the vehical on ramps to for some working room. Here is a ebay listing for a manaflow direct fit cat. (Exc. California). I would also find out what the fault code is prior to replaceing the CAT because replacing the Cat may fix your rattle but might not clear the code. Most auto parts stores will read your code for you to identify the problem area. Be prepared to replace exhaust studs and nuts at the exhaust manifold and they will likely break off. Spray the bolts and nuts with PB Blaster and let them soak overnight and you might get lucky and not break any of them. You can also price a direct fit CAT at your local autopart stores. You might even want to consider bringing your Vehical and CAT to a muffler shop and have them install it. I can not imagine they would charge very much if you have the CAT. and it is a direct fit.

Your o2 sensors may be shot. Also you are probably running rich.

Hey, I gave you a real answer.. based on the big picture.

I knew all that, and like I said I know why it died if you didnt have any previous problems and it wasnt from old O2's...but you can go pound sand as far as I'm concerned till you lose that juvenile avatar.

yea petty your post was real informative.

Yes old o2 sensors don't destroy cats. However if the cat is bad there is a good chance an o2 sensor may be bad aswell,IMO.

what about the pre cat .. how do u know if its bad... where do i get a replacement....

abig84 04-16-2012 08:17 PM

you can buy cheap universal cats but we use those at work alot cause people never want to buy the good ones. they are usually good for one emission test then go to crap.

and this maybe the first time i ever heard anyone complain about a piss on ford picture on a chevy site. pure sign of the apocalypse
