Default Exhaust tip

Are stainless exhaust tips strictly for appearance, or do they also add a little more tone? Ive been looking at ones by flowmaster and magnaflow, and for around 40 bucks, i figure its probably worth it if it adds at least a little but of ttone.

Appearance only. I doubt if the human ear could actually hear any tonal difference.
