Open or Closed Box? CAI

I have a 99 Blazer LS 4.3 Vortec 4x4 Standard, and have been thinking of a cold air intake purchase. I came across a large number of open boxxed cold air intakes with a shield on a few sides or none at all. Then I came across Volant's closed CAI box also with a large cone filter. I don't go off road to often but I was thinking an open CAI would get sloshed and clogged with mud rather quickly if i did. Volant claims to get more cold air by blocking the hot air with their closed box. But it seems like i'd be replacing one box for another, just a cone filter instead of a panel. So which would be better? and open K&N,or a closed Volant? Thx for any info contributed.

im not sure what you mean by opened and closed. ive never heard that term for CAIs. are you sure they are street legal? i have an AEM brute force CAI for my 98 blazer. i love it and will recommend it.

i feel an ever-so-slight difference in throttle response. thats about it. i just like the sound:). and the fact that i only gotta change the filter (not change...clean) every 50-100k miles.:)
