Default Muffler/Tailpipe connection rotted out, anyone know how to install aftermarket parts?

I'm attempting to replace the muffler/tailpipe on my 03 Blazer, I ordered.Walker #55031 tail pipe and Walker #18934. Never really worked on exhaust before, so I assumed all I would need is a clamp to join the two together since the Walker info sheet on Rock Auto only mentions a clamp is necessary. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...411995&jsn=452 When I got the parts I measured each opening and the muffler outlet was slightly larger than 2 1/4" and the tail pipe was right around 2 1/4". So I figured that I could just insert the tailpipe into the muffler, clamp it and call it a day. But the pieces didn't fit together well, so I used vice grips to try to flare out the end of the muffler outlet. Didn't really work that well, could only insert tailpipe about 1/2". What am I doing wrong here?

I ended up doing exactly this. I was hesitant at first because all the reviews I saw online said that this wasn't possible, that the tool was only for restoring the roundness of the pipe. Ended up working perfectly and the exhaust is fully replaced.
