98 blazer wiper motor elec problem
 

ok i have a 1998 blazer my wipers stoped working the other day and would only come on when they wanted to had to drive with my head out the window in the rain i replaced the wiper motor all together and bam same problem when i jiggled the wires it worked for a minute then stoped i am thinking it is in the wiring can somebody please give me some ideas on where to look

Have you checked the wiper relay?

no not sure where that is i checked in both fuse boxes neither show anything for wipers at all it would be nice if there was a easy button like staples but no such luck

I have a 2000 Blazer loaded up power everything and when I hit the washer paddle the washers didn't work (no fluid coming onto the windshield) but the wipers kept wiping and wouldn't shut off. Finally I moved the switch and they stopped. I Wonder what the problem is? Earlier this year the washer wouldn't work at all and one day it started to work. Anyone have any ideas or similar problems and possibly how to troubleshoot it?

i changed the motor and make sure you have the wipers on the right part of the circut by the way and checked the plug i had some that really needed to be cleaned now they all work i can drive in the rain once again

My 97 had the same problem. it was intermittant at first and then just quit working. I saw some posts on the Cheverolet Forum and it helped me. I think your 98 has the same motor. Remove the motor assembly and take the torx screws out of the housing and remove the lid and wiggle the board free of the housing by pulling up on the black connector - carefully wiggling back and forth and pulling up - the only thong holding it in are three blade type connectors using friction fit. Fire up a soldering iron and re-flow any bad solder joints you see. I touched up about half of them. The other forum talked about just the 6 joints connecting the three blade connectors to the black plug, but I had others that looked much worse. I even rebent the 2 copper "dragging connectors and the squeezed the 3 blade receptacles on the motor end. I then cleaned the whole board, front and back with a tooothbrush and alcohol and aired off. I removed excess grease too. Before putting it all back together just plug in the connector, turn the key to accessories and give it a try with it sitting in view of the drivers seat. Watch the wheel spin on all positions. I had trouble with the wipers starting off going backwards and then stopping in the middle of the windshield. To fix this use a cardboard cutout to act as a wiper blade so as not to ruin your wiper or the motor, place it on the spinle where the wiper would bolt, and adjust the the attachment position of the metal arms that turn the axles the blades bolt onto until it starts and finished the wiper where it should. This may take a few times - just keep bolting and unbolting the motor spindle from the driving arms and you wil eventually get it. Just pushing the arms into position with the motor still attached will not get it. Here is how I removed the motor -
1) Remove the plastic bold covers from the blades (pull towards pivot point and use screw driver to pop off)
2) unbolt and remove wipers
3) Open hood and unbolt/unfasten the plastic cowling covering driver arms (I just busted those cheap sh1t plastic rivets, have not replced yet.....
4) Unbolted motor spindle from "driver arms", I used a block of wood cut to length and jammed against body and arms to keep motor from truning
5) Disconnected electrical plug from motor.
6) Opened the plastic box routing wires to right of motor and disconnected big plug in there and moved crap out of the way for room to work
7) unbolted two upper bolts
8) Rocked motor left and right to get out of rubber bushing it is wedged into

I would like to see this help someone, I ended up buying one for $25 at junk yard and had the same problem. I fixed both with a little electrical cleanup and now I have a spare.

Sounds like a bad ground on the wiper motor i had a similar issue once where they only wanted to work when they wanted stranded in the pouring rain I couldn't see where i was driving had to put my head out the window come to find out it was a bad ground connection a loose connection could very well also be another problem and its probably one of the wires these cannot be loose connection motors they draw alot of amperage so it needs the best connection possible corrosion loose connection no wipers lol :icon_beerchug:

99 blazer front wiper motor

My wipers worked intermittently and now not at all. Checked the pulseboard for bad solder joints, it actually looks pristine, can tell from broken screw mounts on pulse board cover it has been replaced. I would like to check to see if the motor is actually getting power from the switch before I buy another board. The problem is I am unversed in schematics and am not sure what pin(s) on the plug/boot thingy to check. Any help in the correct procedure for diagnosing the switch would be greatly appreciated.

From the way it looks on your diagram posted check your fuse make sure its good then turn on your switch and then on the 4 wire harness on your motor probe the yellow wire to + on your meter and find a good ground or use the ground on the battery and you should have 12 volts more then likely you do because the way you described this it sounds like a bad ground somewhere between the bolts that mount the wiper to the firewall and it may not act up all the time but if it is cold or wet does it seem like the wiper motor doesnt want to work more often ?

Also keep in mind the body of the wiper motor is your ground thats how it gets it power on the ground side the ground is not supplied through the wiring harness to the motor dirty corroded bolts or rusted bolts need to be shinned and i would suggest putting some sort of grease to help protect them from water to prevent corossion in the future i doubt your board is bad the mounts could be broke due to wear i believe these motors have some flex in them when running if the mounts your referring to are rubber or plastic that would make sense why there broke. If your motor does flex while running im pretty sure thats your problem what i would suggest trying in a emergency is turn the wiper switch on and move the wiper arm up and down without putting force on it youll be able to move it up and down to tell where not to overdue it go back and forth afew times if the wiper motor turns on then im positive its a bad ground on the motor
