really most HID's are the same unless you get into the really expensive Sylvania's, and those are true HID's but they are very expensive...

HID is HID.
the only things i see go wrong are poor installation, or bad ballasts from the go.
personally i like to purchase electronics face to face so if something goes wrong i dont have to ship it back and wait for a replacement, this is worth more than the $50 you can save ordering online vs buying from your favorite aftermarket truck parts store.
i install PIAAs and Beemers HID kits, the PIAA ones are like twice the price of the beemers ones, but give out the same lighting output as well as use the same parts with different stickers on them
in short the #1 thing i would look for when buying HIDs is WARRANTY HANDLING! from there i pick a colour of lighting and let er rip. i use the 6000k lights just because they look whitest, and higher and they start gettin in to funny colours.
when installing them, just make sure you get your plugs right, some of the kits come wired backwards on some of the headlight plugs (PIAA and Beemers both do the same)
today alone i installed HIDs on three vehicles with one vehicle getting 3 sets and the other ones getting two.
dont be scared of the install, thats all i gotta say!

i think i might go with the ddm's. I have to get 2 sets of hids for the low and high beams right?

I have the DDM kits in my 09 Harley V Rod Muscle 2 bulbs, 08 Roush 427R Mustang, and 2000 Doge mini van. I love the HID's. I will say I like the seperate Hi/Lo bulbs better than the dual element bulbs. The low beams rock on the dual element bulbs the highs seem a little weak. I still love the kits. I love the seperate V Rod bulbs best, I think the seperate bulbs on the 99 S10 should rock too. Jim
