LED Bowtie

well ive decided to try and put a blue Led light behind my grill bowtie. What i would like to know is should i try and find a clear bowtie online or can i somehow get rid of the gold inside the emblem(is it paint or a sticker) and just tape the design off and repaint it the color i want(black) so the edge will be clear so the light will make the outline of the emblem. this is really the only thing slowing me down from doing it .any advice would be appreciated.

i am not sure what the process would be, my first thought though was get a spare from the scrap yard and experiment.

Im pretty sure the back of the bow tie is solid plastic so I wouldn't think you could scrape anything off. You might make one using plaster of paris as a mold and pour liquid resin or "Smooth On" makes a 1:1 liquid plastic pour which comes out clear. I did the bow tie in 3D a while back and can add any material I wish so here's what yours may look like.... might look pretty cool....:icon_playing:

The emblem is 2 pieces, there is the solid color plastic back and a clear plastic front. If you take the back piece and shave the edges to make it smaller than the front plastic piece. Then put an LED behind it and it will work. I have done this on a 2004 Chevy Cavalier that I previously owned. You can paint the back peice black and leave the front piece clear. then just get some spray adhesive and stick the two pieces back together. As for the LED I just drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the plastic grille that the bowtie stuck to. The put the LED through it and then used rubber spacers to elevate the bowtie SLIGHTLY only 1/8 inch to allow the light to shine around. It looked great. My way has a lot of steps but I tend to be a perfectionist. It doesn't work on GMC's or Oldsmobiles because thier emblems are not 2 pieces.
