Default S10 Blazer Instrument Cluster Lights

So I had to dive into my instrument cluster to change out the background lights. I did some YouTube research beforehand. I have successfully removed the instrument cluster and waiting for the rest of my bulbs to get delivered to the part store tomorrow. I will complete the job tomorrow. If there is an easier way to remove and install the climate control side of the dash it would be super helpful.

Follow up...Just finished putting everything back together and still no instrument back lights. Everything else is working fine. Of note, the anti lock light is no longer on. It does turn on when initially starting up and then goes out with the other lights like it is supposed to. I have checked the fuses and they are all good. Does anyone have an idea on this?

When you say "Everything else is working fine." I'm assuming you mean that the following are working properly; turn signal instrument panel indicators, instruments, warning lights.

Could the headlight dimmer switch be bad? Perhaps it is broken in a way such that zero voltage is at the terminal that supplies the power to the instrument panel lights. You could try checking it at the switch.

If the switch is good, you might try tracing the conductors on the flexible PCB on the backside of the instrument cluster to identify which terminal on the plug supplies the ground and which one is the positive voltage to the bulbs in question? With a multi-meter you can check to see if you are getting power to them or not. Checking that the bulb ground is also connect to ground would be good to do while you are at it. You also might check if the ends of the traces on the flexible PCB are lined up properly with the plug and if the metal on them is not worn.

If it turns out you need an instrument cluster, I have a spare one from a 92 from when I used to own one. It's an analog/mechanical one. You are welcome to it for free if you want as long as you pay for shipping. There might be a clip missing at the end of the strings that control the gear-indicator. The part number on the sticker is 16137155.

FYI I also listed some other parts from my old 92 in the "free" section of the classifieds.

I too have a "dark dash" and am going to have to tackle this sooner or later. Was it difficult to take the dash apart? How long did it take you? From what I can tell from other threads, the bulbs are super tiny. I think before I dig in, I'm going to do a little more research, see what I can do as far as upgrading, enhancing or updating. Christine, I'm going to have to go locate your classifieds, will your 92 parts fit my 94?

Lefet,

Using GMPartsexperts.com I found that the exploded diagrams look similar for both the 92 and 94 with some of the instrument cluster part numbers being the same which suggests some interchangeability.

That said, I looked up the part number on the instrument cluster I have (which looks to be one I got from wrecking yard) and apparently it was intended for 92 and 93 S10s and Sonomas (but not the S10-Blazers?). But I suspect it might fit a 94 S10 Blazer and its configuration was not offered that year for that model.

In the mean-time, here are some pictures of what I have. If you want more pictures, let me know. I would love to find a home for my old parts.

In the grand scheme of it all, it was not all that difficult to pull the dash apart. I would say the removal was less than an hour. The most difficulty part is the temperature control side of the dash. That side is tricky because of the lack of pull you can get on the components once the bottom screws have been pulled. The blower speed switch is easy. The rest, not so much so. There are three retaining washers to pull that will allow you to disconnect the hot/cold rod and the rubbery grouping of lines from the back side. I thought that removing the surround from the radio would allow me to access those items easier but it is a tight area and would require your hand to reach around awkwardly. In the end, I just did the best I could through the small opening. It takes a bit, but it can be done. Just know that the reinstallation is harder. Hope this helps.
