why do gauges get wacked when battery put on

i was always curious of this, everytime i do something that requires the battery to get disconnected and then when it comes time to put it back on it goes on fine then i look at my gauges and theyre all out of wack. by this i mean the rpm and mph are pinned to the right and the temp gauge is usually just hanging, i have to keep taping the positive terminal onto the battery and hope it shocks it back to normal

and reason why this does this? is this normal?

Mine doesn't do that, and that doesn't sound normal.

Mine does that, dont keep sparking your battery, your gonna pop afuse or something. For me ,I just drive it and it fixes itself

Some of my gauges will be maxed out, speedo temp. But everytime once i got up to cruising speed they popped right back

today after i got done cleaning the TB, i reconnected the battery, the only one out of place was the temp gauge the needle was drooping, just tapped the cluster and it went back, the way things work haha

Cool, I never really worried about it much

My tach & speedometer pegged when I replaced the alternator on my 2000 Blazer LS. The tach reset itself after I started the engine but the speedometer would not. I was able to reset/push the needle back to the left side by sliding a short piece of string trimmer line through and around the trip reset button. It took a little patients but it is working fine now.

should always connect the positive first when installing battery with the key in the off position
remove the negative first when removing the battery
wonder if that has anything to do with it

From what i've read REXAZZ2 is on the right track - always unhook the neg first the the pos, when reinstalling the pos first then the neg - Key off for both disconect and reinstall of battery - surges the computer and other componets if done any other way - It can also surge the remote start and make it turn over while your trying to hook up the battery
