3D CAD modeling
So I've been toying around with my 1/16th scale crawler, and thought "how awesome would it be if I could put a Blazer body on it".
Can't seem to find any toys with a Blazer body to rob from it. Low and behold, a Google search found a 3D model of one! But it's a solid model. I need it to be a shell to use it as a body for the crawler. Basically roof and sides, no floor, no windows. Then I can 3D print it out here at home and make it work :) Anybody want to take a crack at it? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/blazerf...0850046124.jpg |
Post a link to the file you found and I can take a look when I get some time. Often these are STL files which can be somewhat difficult to work with after the fact. The removal of the unwanted surfaces will be time consuming, but not necessarily difficult. The interesting part comes when attempting to give the remaining surfaces thickness again.

I've been trying to find a blazer body for my 1/10 traxxas slash! Would love to see if this works out lol

The original was a full Sketchup model with wheels and tires and all, I ended up selecting and deleting the random extra bits and leaving me with just the body as pictured above and saving it as an STL.
But here's a link to both of them on my Google Drive account. Original skp file https://drive.google.com/open?id=131...n-MqLg9QpWEw6J Trimmed stl file https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Bx...CvMiI5f8dQyaGs Let me know if those links don't work. I've never actually tried to share a file via Google Drive lol In the end, I'm looking for it to have a wheel base of about 190mm with a body shell thickness between 3-5 mm, if that helps with the scaling of it at all. |
How about machining on a CNC a solid model from expanded foam (insulation XPS) and then using it to fiberglass a shell?

I've never used SketchUp, can you output an IGES or STEP file? Either of those file types would be better to work with than an STL file, but I can see what I can do with it if you can't.
*EDIT* - I was able to edit the STL to remove the windows & the bottom. I just used Fusion 360 to do that part, but I'm having difficulty with getting it back to something that can be 3d printed. Right now it is just half of a Blazer body to cut down on the complication of dealing with the whole thing. I'm also trying to do this on my Surface Pro 5 while at work during lunch which isn't the fastest machine. I would probably be more efficient on my laptop at home. I am going to try using Meshmixer to see what it can do differently. |
Awesome, thank you for messing with it!
I just got in a new toy that I can hopefully turn into my CAD machine AND home media and game server. Won a deal on eBay for a used Dell workstation with an 8 core Xenon and a freaking Quadro! My old FX8350 and RX480 really doesn't like rendering complex models lol. |
I'm surprised at how well my Surface Pro 5 does. It is an i7 model, but with no dedicated graphics card, it does quite well with Fusion 360. I'm not really doing complex modelling with it though. My laptop at home is a Sager custom gaming rig with an i7-8700k, 32gb ram, GTX1080-8gb (can run dual 1080s or 2080s), Samsung 960 pro 2tb m2 drive as primary, and two fire-cuda 2tb hybrid drives as storage.
Well, I'm giving up for the night. This is as good as I could get it: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/blazerf...04f6f7ab6a.png I'm hitting a road block with adding the wall thickness back into it. I dumped the STL for the reworked model onto my google drive --> CLICK HERE. |
Dude freeking awesome work! Thank you for putting time into it!

I messed with it for a few hours today unsuccessfully attempting to get some wall thickness to it for printing. All of my attempts in Meshmixer produced ugly results in Simplify3d. I'm also not very happy with the look of the front grill, but that has bothered me from the initial model. It is very wavy for some reason. I'm out of my element with this kind of work though.
Maybe you could get someone on Fiverr to clean it up and make the necessary internal surfaces to add thickness to it. I can set the dimensions to whatever you want it to be for your crawler, but in the end if you need to print it in pieces to then glue back together, you would want it cut up ahead of time. |
