I've heard that argument before. The only time it becomes an issue is when the 3rd party candidate is VERY similar, save for a few points, to one of the 2 main canidates. Then it does in effect take a vote away, but that's still operating under the assumption that every vote goes to either GOP or Dem.
Take the 2000 election. Potential Gore voters went for Nader, splitting the non-Bush vote, giving Bush the plurality, and the presidency.
