What is mechanical background?
I want to start this thread so we all can basicaly find out how and what mechanical knowlege we have which in turns us giving advice to members with their mechanical issues.
With me I started as helper when I was about 14 years old.Through out my life owning many cars I did all my mechanical work learning everything hands on.I have to say I have probaly owned about 100 different cars and trucks of all makes.
I also took 2 years of automechanic clases in high school.
As the years went by being a DIY for many years and tired of working for someone else I decided to work out of my garage as home mechanic for 3 years.
So after this and during this time I have learned to build engines ,transmissions, rearends and etc.I very mechanicaly inclined and always have been.If I had to say what my weak points are its the computerised /and electrical BS of the newer cars and trucks being manufactured today.Im now 49 my body is banged up/wore out along with other issues so this kinda work is becoming to point I cant do alot of things I used to.Hince a 20 month Jimmy project LOL.Of course it doesnt help when you are working outside the eliments/and gravel/mud etc.Anyways thats my story whats yours?

My background pretty much started off when i was about 16ish? Im 23 now. I met a man after he worked on my mothers car. he Welcomed me to come watch him work on cars etc so i could learn how they worked. I wasnt really interested but i just wanted to know how they actually operated. Ended up falling in love with automotive or anything that ticks. Over the years after that i ended up reading more and more etc and working on my own projects now its all i think about and do for a hobby next to fishing. I wouldnt trade my knowledge for anything.

Oh yeah Fishing is where its at LOL.
I have been working on cars since i was 14....am now 35.
I have built two cars from ground up. I have never built a tranny or axle..i would like to learn how. I can do engine work as well as general maint. I help out my freinds by doing there minor repairs...brakes, steering, and so on.
Never have held a job as a mech..but i think i would like it.

I`m 52 ,never worked in the automotive field or had any schooling. always mechanical, all my life. Pretty much fixed all my vehicles also, through trial and error and reading. I`ve had my Blazer since Feb 2012 bought it for 900 did the the brakes all around, new spider, new pittman and idler, rebuilt the tranny myself and now the fuel pump and lines. Including price of truck I`m up to about 2300.00. Now plan to spend money making it look good. Good clean hobby
My background started with my father, who went to college for auto mechanics. I was ALWAYS in the garage helping him with cars for as long as I can remember. He had me rebuild a carb when I was 8 years old and told me, that there should be no extra parts when I am finished. He put the carb in, and it worked perfectly.
I am an extremely fast learner, I know a lot of people say that, but I skim through something once, and from there i can complete the task without a problem.
For instance. When I did the fuel injectors in the jimmy. I literally skimmed through the hanyes manual (not the most detailed info to begin with) once, and completed the task in about an hour and a half (including time to run to the parts store.

i started at 12 when my bro first started driving and started blowing motors and tranny's, anything that is not computerized is what i know rebuilt many cars, motors, tranny. whent to 2yrs automotive class's after that went straight into another 2yrs of autobody so very inclined in everything weak points are rearends i know allitlle bout em but not much. worked in various shops since i was 15 since my dad grew up with the people that owned the ones i worked at
My dad is a diesel mechanic by trade, one uncle was a mechanic in the army, another 3 were stealership mechanics, one grandpa was head mechanic for the state road dept, other one was a mechanic for the railroad. I grew up in some kinda shop. Dad street raced and later track raced and had me working on carbs by the time I was 5. Rebuilt my first sbc when I was 9 with him watching and had it in a luv on the track by 12. Dad still hardheaded about learning electronics but I started learning when I was 16 and pretty much got obd1 down pat. Still teaching myself obd2 and reprograming/chip burning. Guess I've had a wrench in my hand since 1985. Pro I've done everything from work at a mom and pop as a mechanic/body guy in my teens to maintenance work at factorys, helped a buddy at a upholstery shop for a year or to becoming a mechanic on electric forlifts/battery mechanic. From that I got my journymans electracian and now run my own mechanic/fab shop.
My dad was a carpenter by trade, but tinkered with autos as a hobby his whole life. My first job was an auto apprentice, i became a journeyman tech at 24. I left my trade at 27 and became a trucker - more money, less boss interaction. I now drive allover western canada for twice what i got paid to fix cars. I worked in mom and pop shops, and GM dealerships when in my trade. Now i fix my own stuff, and only work for friends and family sonetimes when needed. I only do easy stuff for them that i could do in my garage - tuneups, diagnosis, suspention and brakes. I also have my blazer project for the last 3 years.
