Whats everyone going to school for?

Just curious what my fellow blazerforum'ers are going to school for. Or what did you get your degree in for those of you that have graduated. Right now I'm going to get my assosiates in computer networking but I want to get a computer enginering degree eventually.

oktain 01-18-2011 10:00 PM

Neat idea for a thread.

I'm currently doing my undergrad in Biology with the biomedical option at Laurentian University in Sudbury, ON, Canada. Hopefully if all works out I'll be teaching either high school or College... depends if I go on to get my M.Sc or not...

Debonair 01-18-2011 10:03 PM

film/video production

cochran07 01-18-2011 10:05 PM

Yeah I was just curious what you guys are wanting to do in life. I'm attending a tech school/community college right now but like I said I want to eventually get a computer enginering degree on top of my networking degree

Oktain that's pretty impressive man. Good luck with that

Most likely end up with a job doing something with GIS (geographic information systems). Its a pretty high in demand career right now. After the first class "intro to GIS" I can go out and get a decent salary job, several students after taking just that one course ended up with jobs with the city doing stuff such as tax assessments. What they would do is deal with layering maps both raster and vector, they will overlay a property tax grid as well as an old RS image (remote sensed, like satellite) with a new one to see if the owners have built anything new such as a pool or addition without a permit..................The government is always watching!

Thats what im eyein up right now but i can also stem over into meteorology, i have a few courses in that right now already so its an easy swap and i will still be able to get some jobs in that field.................Meteorlogy, the only job out there where you can get paid and be expected to be wrong!!!

mov4x4 01-19-2011 01:46 PM

Heavy equipment operation and repair. Hocking college about 20 minutes from Ohio University.

TheBlazin 01-19-2011 03:32 PM

Next fall Im going to Ferris State University for their Welding Engineering Technology.

cochran07 01-19-2011 06:00 PM

@streble- I figured it was something like GIS but wasn't sure.

@ the rest of you guys some pretty interesting stuff. Can't do anything without a college degree nowadays

Dhg1147 01-19-2011 06:00 PM

Went to nursing school now out in the real world with real bills... i hate bills..

cochran07 01-19-2011 06:11 PM

Yeah I'm in school and still in the real world with real bills. GI Bill helps quite a bit tho :-D. In fact I don't even have a job right now but I'm looking.

rob44_90 01-19-2011 06:26 PM

I just transferred to Tennessee Tech for Manufacturing and Industrial Technology.

mov4x4 01-19-2011 06:49 PM

I'm in the "real" world paying on two student loans, cell phone, rent, looking into getting a new truck, and other misc. stuff, but just because people go to school I wouldn't say their not in the "real" world. Not everybody now days can go to there parents and have them pay for it. (Not saying anybody here has there parents doing that)

cbr995 01-19-2011 06:52 PM

Well, I will be going to school to get my AS in Automotive and then take some AA classes at a Community College, transfer my credits to UCF, then get my MBA.

Yeah, I have big dreams.

wlorton 01-19-2011 09:36 PM

I am in my final year for a BS degree in Civil Engineering, and if things suck with the job market I might head back for a second "tour" and pick up my Masters, but the job market is.... fair... :(

zedartwo 01-19-2011 10:26 PM

Diploma in Police Foundations from Georgian College. Thinking on going into Corrections.

ABN31B 01-19-2011 10:55 PM

I have like 84 or 86 grand in college money plus the 100% tuition assisstance and free books ($4,500 per year)...

I would not have taken a job where i am shot at for a living if I were going to go to college. I am wasting it. All of it. 9 years of T.A ($40,500) pissed way, AND all of my credit for work experience has not been converted because I haven't gone to college for 2 course to get my 30-something credits...
I did take a close quater's defensive tactics course from the FBI through a community college once... so guess I was going to school for Advanced Tactics?

I guess I am the exception here :icon_shrug:

cochran07 01-20-2011 04:28 AM

ABN are you still in the Army?

97CountryJukeboxLt 01-20-2011 07:35 AM

After highschool, Computer systems specialist/Network and system security. Working on my HTML4 cert, and i have my Photoshop cs4 cert lol, A+ by the end of the year

ABN31B 01-20-2011 10:10 AM

yeah man. it's my job and hobby (well it was before recruiting).

i have no college ambition. it's funny to see that EVERYONE here has big plans to soak up a degree.
My wife has and MBA and can't work because of our daughter. we have $60k in student loan debt for a cool looking piece of paper (well 2 if you count the BA).
I have a ton of college money and don't even touch it. :icon_shrug:

Either way, it's not for me. If I play my cards right and make it another year, I can post-9/11 it over to my oldest daughter, and we can blow her college fund on Vegas (put it on black, baby!) or something equally as dumb (my mortgage!)

MTopper 01-20-2011 10:47 AM

I am currently in the process of transferring from community college to a university to get my degree in Secondary Education to teach math/history. Math major so i can always be employed and history major so i can teach what i really want to.

cochran07 01-20-2011 11:12 AM

Well ABN if you love the Army then do your 20 man. I understand having no ambition for school. I didnt honestly until my ex made me (not really made me but pursuaded me) and Im actualy enjoying school. Im about to join back up with the Nasty Girls tho (national guard) for that extra pay a month. And luckly theres an infantry unit right here in statesboro

ABN31B 01-21-2011 01:22 AM

let me know how that goes for you man...

unless the NG is completely different, the new business rules that dropped last thursday say NO prior service can retrain (E-1 through E-9), AND the list of PS jobs that can come back in went down for 13 to like 9...

unless you're a Chuck... you might get your feelings hurt... again, the nasties may play by different rules, but as it stands the entire mission for FY 11 should be filled by March. Getting back in is nearly impossible RA or AR...

sorry to hijack your thread. if you want more info, i'll shoot you a PM or better yet, give one of those clowns a jingle and get the NG business rules... the longer you wait the harder it gets. seriously the rules have changed 5 times in 7 weeks, each time taking more and more option away...

cochran07 01-21-2011 10:40 AM

Haha well its my thread so I say hijackings alright :icon_teeth: yeah I know the rules are getting ridiculous about things. But you know the NG always follow a different set of rules then active or reserves. I have someone that I know that's with the unit down here passing my info for me. Easier that way..

bigkhans 01-21-2011 12:13 PM

One of my biggest regrets is not taking advantage of the education opportunities that I had when I was in the army. I spent way too much time partying and drinking. To top it all off, my gi bill expired and i never used it, even though i paid for it.

Gettint back to the op, I'm currently attending college of western idaho for criminal justice.

cochran07 01-21-2011 12:28 PM

Yeah man it sucks they put a cap on how long you got on the gi bill. I kick myself in the rear everyday for not taking core classes at least in the army

blazinloud 01-21-2011 03:03 PM

got 4 months of college and about 4500 hours trade time. need 7200 for a red seal.

cochran07 01-23-2011 01:21 PM

A lot of interesting stuff guys. Its interesting to see the diverse things people want to do in life.
