hello.. Just joined up

Hello everyone. I'm so glad there are such forums as this to talk shop on... I know this spot is for new members and I am a new member, I'm having trouble finding out what the gear ratio is in my 88 s10 blazer... I had the pinion break off a few teeth and am thinking maybe the pinion bearing is bad but to go have it fixed I need to figure out what the gear ratio is ...vin #1GNCT18Z1J0136952 anyone know how to find out what the gear ratio is?

If you already have the cover off, it should say on the ring gear. For example, 11:41 would be 3.73

Look on the sticker in your glove box foor one of these codes

GU4=3.08
GU5=3.23
GU6=3.42
GT4=3.73
GT5=4.10

Gu6 is most common, and gt4 is also somewhat common

Welcome to the forum.

As ChevyRiders said, the RPO code is the easiest way to tell what gears you have. If your glove box is missing the sticker, there are some websites that can read your VIN and tell you as well. If that doesn't work, a GM dealer should also be able to pull that information from your VIN. I believe you can also determine the gears by turning the rear wheel one full turn, and counting the revolutions of the drive shaft but that seems harder to be accurate.

Try starting a thread in the suspension steering and drivetrain section to get some help on that
