What psi should I air my tires to for sand?
 

Just got a set of 30x9.50r15 General Grabbers on stock rims and want to know what I should air them down to for when I drive out onto the beach for 4th of July. This is only the 2nd time I've been on sand, last time failed miserably (didn't have the Grabbers though) so any help/tips would be great!

i uaslly put them down untill there half empty, so they have good surface area on the ground.

I read in a few places that you really shouldn't air down the half sizes. ie 35 12.50 r15. As it can blow the bead very easily. My husband works for a tire company that services all sizes...from cars all the way up to construction vehicles.

Not to say anything against your husband, but i have read that a 15% airdown is what you would want to do.

Do you mean airing down 15% of what they are now or running at a psi of 15% of what they are now (i.e. they are at the recommended 35 psi, so I should air them down about 5 psi so they are at 30 psi)? I've read on other sites saying to air down to 10psi but that seems too low to me. Anyone take their blazers on beaches routinely?

North end of CB is where I'll be going, (if the blazer makes it out there this time). Last time got stuck right at the beginning, can't tell you how it feels to watch a Hyundai Santa Fe drive past you on sand..

If the sand is very loose & hilly I'd go to 18psi otherwise a bit less than normal (around 28-30) should do it. At 18 you'd need to have a pump handy to re-inflate whe back on hard surface.

The 15% air down would be from your tires recommended max pressure, but I believe it was for TRAIL running, on sand you should be able to air down a bit more because of the lack sidewall killing sharp rocks, etc, maybe 20%. I bought a Viair 12V pump (less than $40.00, check http://www.amazon.com/VIAIR-Portable...6388669&sr=8-1) to speed up the air up process, it works great! I can post pics and a write up if anyone is interested. It is pretty small and compact, works quickly, SO QUIET YOU WONT BELIEVE IT.

I was looking into getting a pump similar to that. How long is the hose on it? How easy does it reach to fill the back tires?
