92 K5 Parking Brake Release Handle R&R

Parking brake release handle cable broke and I bought a replacement to install but cannot remove the old one. I am trying to remove the handle assy cable housing where it attaches to the dash (black grommet of some type)to no avail. I'm assuming that it is pushed out through the front once the clips on the inside are pushed in but these clips seem to be solid and will not move.
Anyone remove and replace one of these before? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If it was an S10, this is how you do it. Don't know if it's the same on a full size. Reach behind the dash and you'll find the cable handle has a short cable runnung to the release mechanism. You can actually pull back on the mechanism (it's spring loaded for this reason) and there is a little ball on the end of the handle cable. You then just have to work the ball out of the mechanism. Sounds more complicated than it is. Kicked my ass until I figured it out. Now it takes about 15 seconds. A pair of needle nose pliers helps.
