Grille Painting Prep
 

I did some searching, but didn't get a definitive idea of what to do. I figured now that a few people have painted their chrome grille, they could give me a good list of what to do.

I want this paint to last, and I hear preparation is the key.

What do I need to do in terms of sanding, and what grits? I'm thinking I'll need a fairly high grit, as I do not want to change the shape of the plastic!

I just need a list of steps. Ex: Sand @ ___ grit, then prime, then sand @ ___ grit, ect.

Thanks in advance, I'm not really knowledgeable on painting, but I can do it. It isn't rocket science after all.

I'd take like 180 grit to sand down all the shiny chrome stuff. Or 200 grit. Up to you and what you can find.

Then primer. Three-four light coats. If the surface feels rough wet sand on coat 3 with 1000 grit wet-sandpaper. (special stuff that lets you do wet sanding) Do another coat and see if it's better. If not, repeat.

Then to the same thing but with the color you want.

Then 1 light coat of clear, 1 medium coat, and 1 heavy coat.
