headliner first generation blazer

Anyone have any knowledge on replacing headliners? I've tried it once a few years back and it failed miserably. Of course I didn't understand the importance of scraping off all the old glue and I didn't drop the foam padding. How hard is it to drop and hang the foam itself? Any advice would be great

when i redid my headliner i had to remove everything attached to the headliner and remove it from the rear i just carefully peeled the old fabric and left the foam i just took a wire brush to the top layer and pressure aired the remnants... i then sprayed it with soundproofer and let it sit for a hour or so and sprayed some spray adhesive i got from menards i think it was call 77m or 90m cant remember the name ill have to look it up but i bought a cotton bed sheet and carefully roller brushed it on spraying and extra layer of the adhesive as i brushed on the fabric...so far so good 7 months strong not a bubble so far

thanks man. I've been doing some research and it seems pretty simple. The first time I tried it I didn't drop the headliner and it didn't work.

I've done two and used countertop adhesive. My car was done about 10 years ago and looks as good as the day it was put back in the car. It is garaged though. I'm not sure on the other car.
I pulled off the fabric and wire brushed off the old foam. After that just apply the adhesive on the headliner board and the material. Wait until it becomes tacky and put them together like doing window tint.
Auto upholstry shops will have the fabric with the foam backing and the adhesive at just about any hardware store.

Thanks guys. Chevyboy did I hear you right? You used a cotton bed sheet as your headliner?

CHEVYBOY89 04-27-2014 03:21 PM

Yes I used a black cotton king size bed sheet...from Wal-Mart the sheet was a couple bucks...I think I payed more for the adhesive...

Be careful to let it get tacky or it will seep through the sheet

I got rid of the flimsy fiberglass headliner in my 89 S15 Jimmy and installed an ABS Headliner. It came with fabric already installed and it fit perfectly.

Where did you get it from? I've seen a few but they were over $300. I think I'll stay with the original for that price
